Annie's Project: Farming in New Jersey's Cities and the Urban Fringe

Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) will present a new, urban-focused version of the popular Annie’s Project, “Annie’s Project: Farming in New Jersey’s Cities and the Urban Fringe.” It is a six week/one evening per week course, in 3 locations simultaneously, Roseland, New Brunswick, and Cherry Hill, NJ. The central New Brunswick location is where speakers will give presentations that are recorded and livestreamed to the remote/virtual Cherry Hill and Roseland class locations where local facilitators will lead discussions.  As in the previous Annie’s Project programs, this workshop is designed to educate and train new and aspiring farm women and military veterans on risk management strategies and provide tools for successful business management, but in addition, focuses on topics within these areas of risk that present unique challenges to urban farmers. Participants will have access to invaluable tools to help sustain their farm business, including the expertise of keynote speaker Charlotte Smith, 3 Cow Marketing. Charlotte is a successful farmer and businesswoman who offers an online marketing and training program that helps farmers learn marketing techniques to grow a successful business. Charlotte will also be the instructor for the Marketing class on December 3. “New and aspiring farm women and military veterans will gain educational training on the essentials of preparing a business plan, considered a vital roadmap to success for any business,” adds Brumfield. The women will also benefit from networking opportunities with their peers and other agricultural professionals. Presentations on topics uniquely challenging to urban growers include: “Accessing land through short-term lease or purchase,” “Soil quality, contamination and testing,” Water issues: availability and conservation,” and “Right-to-farm issues: poultry farming.”Registration is open. Early bird registration until November 3 is $125. From November 4 through December 2 the fee is $150. Dates: December 2019 - Tuesdays on the 3rd, 10th & 17th, and after the holidays in January 2020 - Tuesdays on the 7th, 14th, and 21st.

Time: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Dinner will be provided at 5:00 pm

The class will be held in three locations.  The New Brunswick location is considered the 'central' location where all speakers will go to be recorded as they present. Those presentations will be simultaneously live-streamed to the 'remote' class locations in Cherry Hill and Roseland. Each of the 3 class locations will have attendees and facilitators.  Communication between locations will be possible and attendees from the 'remote' locations will be able to ask questions of the speakers in New Brunswick.
