Training for Small and Mid-Sized Tractors and Their Implements

Tractors are very versatile vehicles with a wide variety of uses and knowing proper safety and maintenance is paramount. Whether you are seasoned or a beginner this comprehensive course taught by Shane LaBrake is for you! Join us at NOFA for a two day, hands-on workshop that demystifies tractors and empowers their users to operate and maintain their machines more safely and with greater skill and confidence. The course will cover both four-wheel tractors and two-wheel tractors and common implements. Attendees are encouraged to bring specific questions regarding their equipment.

This course is hands-on and intensive, running from 9 am to 5 pm each day. Portions of it will be conducted outside. Please wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe footwear that can be dirtied with oil and grease stains and is adequate for the forecasted weather conditions.

The cost of registration includes a tractor safety and maintenance manual as well as lunch on both days. Attendees are encouraged to bring water and snacks.

Day 1: May 20
An introduction to all of the operating features of a tractor; a primer (with props) on the internal combustion engine; safety precautions and daily/routine maintenance checks. If time allows, supervised tractor driving practice and attaching implements with a three point hitch will be covered.

Day 2: May 21
All of the basic "do-it-yourself" yearly maintenance jobs (change engine oil/filter, air filter, fuel filter, coolant, hydraulic transmission fluid; add grease to all grease fittings; check air pressure in tires; adjust fan belt; replace spark plugs; etc.).

Discounts: Beginning farmers (those who have been managing or working on a farm for 10 years or less) may be eligible for a 50% off scholarship. Email education@nofanj.org with a brief description of your farming experience and how this course will help you to apply.

Course registration is capped at 12 participants to enable hands-on participation for all members. Based on interest, we may run a second course in the fall. If you cannot attend in the spring but would like to attend in the fall, please send us a message at education@nofanj.org
